Central Montcalm Public School
-
The Central Montcalm Public
School District is located in the heart of Montcalm County and serves the
communities of Stanton, Sheridan, and Sidney.
The lakes, state land, and agricultural base of the school district give it
a friendly “small town” appeal. As the school district encompasses the
county seat, many government and county offices are housed conveniently
within the district. Although the area itself is scenically rural, Grand
Rapids, Lansing, and Mt. Pleasant are easy drives, providing access to the
industrial, cultural, economic, and political centers of Southwest and
Central Michigan.
The community is also the home
of Montcalm Community College which offers its residents Associates Degree
Programs, as well as other postsecondary school educational opportunities.
The Montcalm Area Career Center is located next to Montcalm Community
College. It offers a wide variety of career technical programs that are a
springboard to a certificate or to a college degree made possible by
articulation agreements with the college.
Central Montcalm is one of only
a handful of Michigan school districts that has each school building
accredited by the North Central Association (NCA). This accreditation has
been in effect since 1978 at all Central Montcalm buildings.
Accreditation is a process through which staff, district personnel, and the
Board of Education commit to meet a set of standards necessary for a quality
education. Additionally, the process fosters school improvement through
requirements for self-study, a visitation by other educators, and evaluation
of programs and services by other educators.

Montcalm Community College
- Montcalm Community College began in fall 1963 as an idea in the minds
of a group of public-spirited citizens. It had become obvious to the people
of Montcalm County that such factors as distance to existing colleges,
rising educational costs, increasing demands upon institutions of higher
education and the growing specialization of the work force were combining to
form a mandate for local post-high school education.
MCC became a reality on March 2, 1965 when it was established by an
overwhelmingly favorable vote. The first Board of Trustees was also elected
and a one-mill annual tax levy was established.
Completion of a joint site survey in September resulted in the purchase
of land on Sidney Road for the campus. MCC’s 240-acre-campus is near both
the geographical and population centers of the district and is accessible
from all directions by county and state highways.
Four presidents have served MCC including Dr. Donald Fink, 1965-1971; Dr.
Clifford Bedore, 1971-1978; Dr. Herbert Stoutenburg, 1978-1984; and Dr.
Donald C. Burns, 1984-present.
The college has enjoyed a long history of accreditation by the North
Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
MCC has progressed steadily since its approval by area voters in 1965.
Credit courses are available to students desiring selected classes or
classes leading to a certificate or degree. Upgrading and retraining
courses, a wide variety of non-credit and recreation courses, employment
services, counseling, financial aid assistance, career planning services and
tutoring are also available. A dedicated staff, student body and community
have helped make the dream of 1963 a viable community college — a learning
community dedicated to meeting the educational needs of the people it
serves.
